The Challenge

Lands End to John O'Groats. It's a bit of a fitness challenge, isn't it? A trip of beating records and 'firsts'? Well, this isn't like that. It is not even the first time it has been done by bus, although we think we could finish faster... well, we could excepting that we are stopping at Ipswich on the way..

What was the challenge?      Well, it's fairly simple. A continuous trip from Lands End to John O'Groats (via Ipswich), with stops only for sleep. It was be completed by the use of local bus services only - no rail, taxi, coach or plane. There was no restriction on route choice, which is just as well as it had to change a few times!. The event started on Monday 14th October 2013 and finished at John o'Groats on Monday 21st October.

The journey was recorded as a blog by Jeremy and Michael. Click on the image to read all about it.

In addition, Omnibus (the company that lent so much support to making this trip happen) released two newsletters - one before the trip and one after:

Who are we?    Two of us made the trip -

Jez Howat:  The trip is in support of Jez's own daughter, Cariad. (see her information pages). Jez is a Project Manager who looks after depot operations software for Omnibus. With a background in vehicle tracking and demand responsive services, travelling by bus is surely outside of his comfort zone!

Michael Meilton: Is the brains behind this trip. An old fashioned bus scheduler at heart, Michael heads up the Omnibus Commercial team and travels everywhere using public transport. His background is - not surprisingly - bus scheduling, driving buses, and travelling on bus routes!

Omnibus are the leading supplier of back office software to the UK bus industry - helping operators and local authorities get the most out of limited resources and keep things on time. That is why we are confident about getting from one end of the country to the other... in the shortest possible time. We believe in buses... well, Michael does more so, but he almost always arrives to a meeting on time and having used bus or train (or combination of the two).
